(1) Nanocarrier and Diagnostics
In the 1966 Oscar-winning US film "Fantastic Voyage," a miniaturized crew traveled through the bloodstream of a comatose scientist in a tiny submarine on a mission to treat a blood clot in his brain. Today, many of the functions of the miniaturized submarine (not the riders though) are beginning to be realized on highly organized multifunctional nanoparticles. These include targeting, sensing, image enhancing, and encapsulating cargos---drug, enzyme and DNA. The applications include cell tracking, intracellular molecular sensing, drug/DNA/enzyme delivery and stem cell transformation. I will illustrate these functions with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (both hollow and solid form) using recent works from my laboratory as examples.
(2) Mesoporous silica thin films with perpendicular channels
The morphology control in template sol-gel silica synthesis is a fascinating subject. Inspirations could be obtained from understanding the silica shell of diatom, a unicellular algae. A unique feature of diatom cells is that they are enclosed within a cell wall made of silica, called frustule, with beautiful patterns. In trying to understand and mimicking diatom, mesoporous silica SBA-15 thin films were synthesized in free-standing and supported form. The perpendicular orientation of the nanopores was determined by GISAX. Their formation mechanism was studied by SAXS and SANS.
